Basketball – BBL: medi Bayreuth loses sole shareholder

Bayreuth (SID) – Bundesliga basketball club medi Bayreuth is losing its sole shareholder. Entrepreneur Carl Steiner announced on Monday that he would be retiring from the current position at the bottom of the table on June 30 after almost 40 years of commitment.

“It has become increasingly difficult for a small location like Bayreuth to survive in the premier league. I can no longer and do not want to put in the personal effort required to lead Bayreuth basketball into a successful future,” said the Optics entrepreneurs announced in a personal statement.

“The current, precarious sporting situation has not influenced my decision, since a possible path to the ProA offers interesting opportunities, especially for local talents,” Steiner continued.

He will bring his “full commitment to ensure an orderly transition to a new shareholder structure.” According to Steiner, he assumes that the association will be able to find new shareholders “in the next four to eight weeks”.

Together with his brother Horst, a tax consultant, Carl Steiner helped Bayreuth basketball to flourish from 1984 onwards. High point: Winning the championship and cup in 1989 – under the club name Steiner Bayreuth.

Even the great Michael Jordan once slipped on the Bayreuth jersey, if only as part of a show game organized by Jordan’s biggest sponsor in 1990.
