Australian Open: For the environment! Alexander Zverev changes footprint | Sports

He plays tennis well – and now he’s doing something for the environment too!

Alexander Zverev (25) had an examination of how many kilometers he covers with his team each year and what CO2 footprint that leaves behind. From May 2021 to May 2022 it was 250 tons at 500,000 km.

Consequence: Hamburg residents want to reduce their footprint through better travel planning. And of course that of his team. That includes six people at the Australian Open in Melbourne: the coaches Alexander Zverev senior, Sergi Bruguera and Michail Ledowskich, manager Sergej Bubka jr., Physio Hugo Gravil and girlfriend Sophia Thomalla.

Zverev: “During my injury break, I thought about the consequences that the team causes for the environment. I also want to take responsibility for our impact on the environment and society.”

Zverev developed the study with the environmental and social consulting company Carbon Clarity. However, since he only comes to most tournaments by plane, the Olympic champion invests in various projects.

In Berlin in a moss tower, in the renaturation of high moors in the Diepholzer Moor and the planting of areas in Sauerland that were devastated by storm Kyrill. In the Alps, mountain slopes are being planted, and renaturation and further afforestation are also planned in several projects, including in Werdohl and in the Hunsrück.

He was inspired by former world number one Ashleigh Barty (26), who resigned a year ago after winning the Australian Open. “We have seen significant progress in what Ash Barty is doing, which is raising awareness and taking action towards social responsibility,” Zverev said.

But now his focus is on the Australian Open in Melbourne. He played against Michael Mmoh (USA) in the second round on Thursday night. Because tennis remains his core business.
