The Puerto Rico Baseball Federation (FBPR) announced this Wednesday the appointment of Juan ‘Igor’ González as one of the members of the coaching staff of the National Team, with a view to the World Baseball Classic (WBC) in 2023.

González, a two-time Major League Baseball MVP of the American League, has excelled as a manager in Puerto Rico and internationally.

“Juan ‘Igor’ González is a proven winner, always committed to the Baseball Federation and to Puerto Rico. He enjoys the respect and admiration of the players and the country. Together with the leader Yadier Molina and the rest of the coaching staff, we will present a first-rate working group in search of the championship”, said Dr. José Quiles Rosas, president of the FBPR.

At the international level, González has gold medals as a manager in the Central American and Caribbean Games in Barranquilla 2018, the Pan American Games in Lima 2019 and the Caribbean Cup in the Bahamas 2022. In addition, he has been champion of Double A Superior Baseball in Puerto Rico as leader of the Grays of Humacao in 2021 and the Toritos de Cayey in 2022.

“It is a privilege and an honor to proudly represent my country on the coaching staff, taking my knowledge to the boys to give our country the best show, which deserves it,” said the former Major League player.

It will be his second appearance in the Puerto Rican coaching staff in a WBC. On this occasion, he will be together with the leader, Yadier Molina.

“My respect and admiration for Yadier Molina. We have always had mutual respect. It’s time to help him. This is Puerto Rico. You have to leave things behind, this is Puerto Rico and you have to give your all for the country,” González highlighted.

General manager Joey Solá reported that González will be the team’s assistant hitting coach.

“The inclusion of Juan ‘Igor’ González is extremely important. Not only because of what he offers on a personal level, but also because of his experience, his character and the way he reaches out to the players. He will help us with hitting and assisting the team’s hitting coach. We are grateful that he has accepted this challenge and has accepted it with the humility that characterizes him”, Solá pointed out.
