Wassho baseball club coach resigns, first-year club members corporal punishment

A 60-year-old male coach of the baseball club at Wakayama Commercial High School (Kenji Nakamura, principal) in Sunayama Minami, Wakayama City admitted that he had used corporal punishment on the club members and offered to resign on the 3rd. The school accepted the offer on the same day.

According to the school, on October 15, during knocking practice on the school grounds, the coach said, “The ball is slow to come out,” and hit the student’s head with a wooden bat from above the helmet. The student suffered minor head injuries. On the 17th, the situation came to light after a consultation with the parents of the victim students. The coach was not a faculty member, but a volunteer who coached the baseball team. He had already reported him to the Japan High School Federation and removed him from coaching.

Principal Nakamura said, “We would like to carefully fulfill our accountability to the parties concerned, including club members, current students, and parents, and strive to regain their trust.” A successor will be decided in the near future.
