Today’s best NBA bets: odds, lines and predictions for Friday

By Kate Constable

Timberwolves al Jazz

The Timberwolves (12-12 SU, 9-15 ATS, 10-14 O/U) hit the road for a five-game West Coast road trip and make their first stop against the Jazz (15-12 SU, 15- 12 ATS , 15-12 O/U) tonight.

I generally don’t rely solely on trends, but this one caught my eye. For whatever reason, the Jazz like to play fast and efficiently on Fridays because over their last five Friday night meetings, the totals in those games were 258 (this was also against the Timberwolves), 246, 267, 247 and 258. The Minnesota also surpassed tonight’s total of 234.5 in four of its last five games. The teams also play at top 10 pace in the league, with Minnesota in first place in pace of the season. Not to mention, this will also be Rudy Gobert’s first time playing at Utah since he was traded to Wolves in the offseason, so it’s only fair to expect a big night from him. I see a lot of runs scored in Utah tonight.

CHOOSE: Timberwolves-Jazz Oltre 234,5

Pistons to Grizzlies prediction

The Pistons (8-19 SU, 14-11-2 AS, 14-13 O/U) and the Grizzlies (16-8 SU, 12-11-1 ATS, 11-12-1 O/U) face off for the second time this week, but this time, in the Home of the Blues.

Memphis outscored Detroit last Sunday, 122-112, and I expect a similar result tonight. However, instead of subjecting myself to potential backdoor coverage like the one that happened between the Pistons and Pelicans on Tuesday, I will play the first half and take the Grizzlies -6 1H. Memphis knows how to start games strong, going 16-8-1 against the spread in the first half this season, and this is a great place to do it at home. The Pistons, meanwhile, are playing their third game in four nights, all on the road, and their fourth game in six nights. Detroit struggled to rebound against Memphis in their last meeting and were outscored 56-38 in the paint. I don’t think much has changed in the last five days that will allow those numbers to change too much.

Here’s a fun trend for you, courtesy of our BetQL model: Taylor Jenkins is 34-13 ATS in the first half after a landslide victory by 15 or more points while coaching Memphis. The Grizzlies just beat OKC by 21 points Wednesday night.

CHOICE: Grizzlies 1H -6

King to the Cavaliers preview

The Cavaliers (11-5 SU, 13-9-2 ATS, 9-15 O/U) home three games began Tuesday with a win over the Lakers and continue tonight with the welcome by the Kings (13-9 SU, 14 -7-1 ATS, 11-10-1 O/U).

The success of the Kings has been a nice surprise this season and a fun team to follow. Who doesn’t like a good Light The Beam chant? However, I don’t think Kings fans will hear much about it tonight. Sacramento lost to the Milwaukee Bucks on Tuesday in what was their first game of a six-game road game. While a loss to a very good Bucks team is not something to worry about. The Kings are a team I’m selling right now.

Cleveland will be looking to avenge its loss in Sacramento last month. To do that, they’ll need to do a better job slowing down Domantas Sabonis, who led the Kings in scoring with 21 points. That will be important, especially if De’Aaron Fox, who is listed as questionable with a foot injury, is indeed out tonight because that means the Kings will run their offense primarily through Sabonis. The good news for Cavs fans is that they have both Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley as two of the best rim protectors in the game. Cleveland also leads the NBA in defensive efficiency and scoring defense, holding teams to 104.9 ppg. The home team returns to finish the job tonight.

CHOICE: Knights -3.5
