In 2012, 23 days will be 10 years since the captain of the Osaka Municipal (now Prefectural) Sakuranomiya High School basketball team (17 years old at the time) took his own life due to the corporal punishment of his adviser. In a survey last year conducted by the Japan Basketball Association among the parents of players under the age of 12 (U12), 10.8% of the respondents said there was violence by coaches during games. Reform of awareness among leaders is insufficient, and the road to eradicating corporal punishment is difficult.
Last spring, the association conducted a survey of the guardians of athletes under the age of 12 in order to grasp the reality of violence during coaching. Of the 9,332 people who responded, 1,009 said that the coach was violent during the game. A total of 3,260 people (35.0%) answered that they were verbally abusive.
