In previous years, the draft order was set in reverse order to the regular season order. As part of the players’ union effort to reduce the incentive for uncompetitive teams to lose games, the most recent collective bargaining agreement introduced a lottery to determine the top six players overall. The odds of a team winning a higher selection were still weighted in favor of the clubs with the worst records, even though the three worst teams all had an identical chance of making it to the top. All 18 technically non-play-off teams were battling for a top six pick, albeit with diminishing odds for clubs with better records. The 12 teams are ranked based on the completion of the postseason, with team revenue share status separating teams eliminated in the same round.
This year, the Nationals, A’s and Pirates had the best odds of winning overall in 1st place. Each club has a 16.5% probability. The Reds (13.25%) and Royals (10%) completed the top five as the only other teams with a 10% or better chance of a top pick. Aside from Pittsburgh, the Twins were the biggest beneficiaries of the new system, making the top 5 despite finishing 13th worst. The Royals fell out of the top ten despite finishing fifth from the bottom, while Oakland slipped from second-worst to sixth.
The lottery only takes effect in the first round of the draft. Beginning with the second round, the picking order will be decided in reverse order of the previous season’s rankings, barring compensatory and competitive credit picks.
While the draft order is official, there is clearly a lot of uncertainty as to which players will be at the top of the class. Baseball Amerika He updated his first Prospects 100 draft in October with LSU right-handed Dylan CruzThat’s right, Tennessee Chase Dolander and Ole Miss Shortstop Jakob Gonzales Among the most talented prospects. There will be plenty of action when the amateur baseball circuit gets underway next spring.
