Stan Wawrinka: “I grew and improved thanks to Roger Federer”

The paper of Stan Wawrinka in Switzerland it must not have been easy at any time. The winner of three Grand Slams has always been overshadowed by the great legend of Swiss tennis, Roger Federer but he has always known how to get along and in fact every time he has had the opportunity he has praised the role of his compatriot, since he also considers that precisely because of him he has managed to become one of the best players of the ‘Big 3’ era. ‘.

Now, with Federer already retired, the man from Lausanne is the only active representative of the golden generation that the Swiss have lived, who have seen how Roger and Stan have competed to win every tournament they have played for more than fifteen years. That is why the man who became number three in the ATP ranking wanted to pay tribute to Federer, something he did in an interview for Canal +, where he left emotional words for what all the Swiss consider to be the best player in all the times.

Wawrinka has recognized the importance of Roger, since before he managed to lift his first Grand Slam, he reached the elite of tennis by winning Olympic gold in Beijing in the doubles modality precisely together with Federer, with whom he also won the Cup Davis, the two titles to which Stan is most fond. “I owe him a lot in my career. There were positive things. I grew and improved thanks to him. He helped me a lot,” Wawrinka said. “Thanks to him I won the Olympic Games and the Davis Cup. Those are two of the most important titles of my career.”

LIKE HIS OLDER BROTHER

In addition, the winner of three ‘majors’ admits that he will never be able to live up to what Federer has achieved, whom he considers the great tennis legend of his country and who has always had great advice for him and for all the players in his country, something for which Wawrinka will always be grateful. “When I arrived, Roger was already at the top of his game. He took me like an older brother. He helped me, we trained a lot together. I was lucky to be able to work a lot with him, in training and in tournaments. In the Cup Davis we shared a lot of things. Later, we became friends. We were on the same level, not in terms of our careers, but in terms of our behavior and our support for each other.”

Finally, the 37-year-old player was happy with the career he is having and ensures that he always gives 100%. He also believes that what Federer has achieved will never be repeated again, at least in Switzerland. “Nobody will be able to do what he has done, at least not in Switzerland. What I do, I do to the best of my ability. You also have to be able to appreciate this kind of career.”
