If you’ve ever felt let down by stealth in Skyrim, a new Skyrim mod overhauls the Elder Scrolls RPG game’s stealth system. That’s right: no more easily fooling enemy AI unaware as you crawl just outside their search radius with stealth archery. Instead, you’ll have to contend with smarter, more thorough enemy checks and searches, as they treat that surprise knee arrow as more than a minor inconvenience.
Listen, I love the sheer fun of Skyrim stealth archery as much as the next person. You crouch in the shadows, land a cheeky critical hit at the nearest enemy, then laugh maniacally as other nearby enemies stumble before declaring it must have been the wind. However, the idea of actually requiring stealth promises to completely rethink Skyrim’s dungeon-crawling experience.
The Skyrim Sneaking Out Sneaks mod comes from creator Aixcalibur, and it makes a number of key changes to enemy AI and behavior aimed at making stealth more difficult, while ensuring it’s a style of viable (and fun) game. First, enemies won’t be so quick to ward off the threat to their lives after being hit themselves or seeing a companion fall.
Once they start searching, “intelligent” enemies such as humanoids, automatons, and dragon priests will actually patrol the dungeon looking for intruders, with somewhat random behavior but potentially leading them up. ‘at the entrance to the lair. Not only that, but they’ll often decide to team up with a friend to make it a little harder for an assassin to take them out one by one, though you’ll still occasionally catch a stupid lone wanderer.
