The honorary prize at the Swiss “Sports Awards” has not been awarded for no less than 13 years – most recently to the sports official Adolf Ogi. It shouldn’t have been a difficult decision this year.
Because in a year in which what is probably the best Swiss athlete of all time is retiring, the award is the logical consequence. Between 2003 and 2017, Federer was honored seven times as Swiss athlete of the year – more often than anyone else.

For the surprise guest, it was the first public appearance in his home country since the end of his career was announced in September. Federer therefore took the opportunity to say thank you: “Thank you for the great support I have received in this country over the years. It means a lot to me,” said Federer on stage.

He is only the sixth recipient of the honorary award in history: Res Brügger (2001), Ferdi Kübler (2003), Peter Sauber (2005), Adolf Ogi (2007) and the U17 world champion football team (2009).
