For the first time in major league history, a lottery determined the order of selection for the amateur draft. The Pittsburgh Pirates emerged as big winners.

The Pennsylvania team, which held the best odds of drafting first, tied with the Washington Nationals and Oakland Athletics, was blessed by the abacus.

Rounding out the top 5, in order, are the Nationals, Detroit Tigers, Texas Rangers, Minnesota Twins and Athletics.

The Pirates will select first for the sixth time in their history.

“Once in a while in this sport, as we all know, it helps to get a little boost. This was the case tonight, launched general manager Ben Cherington, whose remarks were transcribed by the ESPN network.

“I don’t think it comes with added pressure. I anticipate and hope that we will not be in this situation again in the next few years. But we’re going to take advantage of it this time.”
