Team Nijhof has not only expanded in the dressage direction, but also in the jumping direction. It concerns the three-year-old KWPN stallion Onassis (Grandorado TN x Quasimodo vd Molendreef), which Nijhof now co-owns with EGJ Morssinkhof and Melvin Greveling.

Onassis, bred by S. Wijnveen from Winterswijk-Woold, completed the KWPN autumn performance test and was registered last month with 82.5 points. He scored five times an 8.5: for canter, reflexes, technique, talent as a jumper and posture & balance. The other points on his list of marks are: 7.5 for walk, 7 for trot, 7.5 for rideability and also 7.5 for attitude.

Around the table

“It’s nice to have a good Grandorado and with Burggravin, Darry Lou and F-One USA, among others, Onassis comes from a nice tribe. That is important for a stallion,” Henk Nijhof tells Horses.nl. He had followed the stallion for a long time. “He has a peculiarity in terms of blood structure, but it only makes sense if it is a real one. We agreed at the time: if he develops very well, we will sit around the table. After he passed the performance test very well, we closed the deal.”

A separate one

“It all still has to happen, of course, but I think Onassis is an extremely good horse. I think it’s really special.” The stallion is provisionally ridden by Melvin Greveling and will be in Nijhof’s stables during the breeding season of 2023. “Then we will continue to discuss who will drive it.”

Grandorado limited availability

Nijhof is happy to have a son from him next to top stallion Grandorado TN NOP. “If everything continues to go well, the sport will be paramount for Grandorado with Willem in the coming years. We are not sure yet, but Grandorado will certainly not cover fully, so we have a nice alternative with his son Onassis.”
