NASHVILLE – The owner of Titans Amy Adams Strunk fired general manager Jon Robinson on Tuesday, midway through his seventh season at Tennessee with his team going 7-5.
The Titans confirmed Strunk’s decision in a statement. Ryan Cowden, the vice president responsible for sports personnel, will lead the sports personnel for the remainder of the campaign. The Titans plan to begin a hiring process for the new general manager very soon, and accelerate it at the end of the campaign.
Strunk said her goal since becoming the team’s majority shareholder in March 2015 has been to improve the performance of every department of the NFL franchise, which was founded by her late father, Bud. Strunk added that she considers the Titans to have made “significant progress” on and off the field.
Robinson, who hails from Union City, Tenn., was hired as general manager by the Titans in January 2016 after the franchise went 5-27 in 2014 and 2015.
The Titans have never gone worse than 9-7 during Robinson’s tenure. They currently sit atop the AFC Southern Division and could claim the title for a third consecutive season, a feat not achieved since the franchise joined the original AFL.
The Titans, however, are coming off a 35-10 defeat in Philadelphia, a loss that was marked by a big receiver performance. A.J. Brownwhich they exchanged at Eagles in the first round of the last NFL draft. Brown wanted a new contract and got it from Philadelphia after the trade that saw Tennessee draft rookie Treylon Burks in 18e rang.
