Mourning for George Cohen: England world champion died | Sports

Mourning for a world champion!

Fulham legend George Cohen died on Friday aged 83! His ex-club announced this on its website.

The right-back played for the “Cottagers” for 13 years until a serious injury ended his career at the age of just 29. Fulham was the only club in his career. Even after the end of his playing career he was often a guest in the stands at Craven Cottage.

Fulham owner Shahid Khan (72): “George Cohen is inseparable from Fulham history. The unparalleled success of 1966 took him into the hearts of a whole nation but it was Fulham where he spent his career and he meant the world to the club. He was a kind and humble man who was always generous with his time and always had a story to tell. George and his family are in my heart now and always and I thank George for setting the ultimate standard at Fulham as a player and as a person.”

In 1964 he completed his first international match. He was one of the regulars at the 1966 World Cup and was also in the starting XI in the legendary final against Germany (4-2 aet).

George Best († 59) called him the “best full-back” he had ever played against. For world champion coach Alf Ramsey († 79) he was “England’s greatest right-back”. His former club honored him with a statue in front of Craven Cottage in 2016.
