Mirabel, Quebec, December 17, 2022 – Miguel Cienfuegos only needed two years to prove his worth in the Independent Frontier Baseball League… and to attract the attention of Major League Baseball scouts.

The Canadian pitcher of the year with the Capitales de Québec, in the Frontier league and among Canadian baseball players playing in independent baseball has just taken his first steps to realize his dream of one day reaching the major leagues… by signing his first professional contract in affiliated baseball, with the San Diego Padres organization!

The rise of Cienfuegos is quite remarkable. Two years ago, the man who played for the Laval Pirates of the Quebec Junior Elite Baseball League (LBJÉQ) didn’t even play baseball anymore. He had retired after a fine career at the college level and in the LBJÉQ.

The COVID-19 pandemic will have been beneficial for Cienfuegos who then decided to try his luck with Team Quebec in the Frontier League.

On the strength of a phenomenal season where he won 9 victories and passed no less than 80 opposing batters in the mitt in just under 117 innings of work, Cienfuegos joins the Quebec Capitales organization in 2022.

With them, he shines brightly maintaining an ERA of 1.79, the lowest in team history, signing no less than 10 wins, working 131 innings and scoring 106 strikeouts. taken.

Such statistics earned him the starting pitcher for the all-star game on the circuit and, at the end of the campaign, he was elected “pitcher of the year”.

And called to don the uniform of the Adelaide Giants in the Australian baseball league, he stands out again, getting six starts… leading his team to five wins in his six games.

Miguel is now on his way back to the country having ended his stay in Australia with a 2.40 earned run average in 30 innings of work.

Miguel must now rest, he who pitched almost 200 innings in 2022 and he will have to begin his preparation for the spring training camp of the Padres organization.
