On Wednesday, December 7, in Nyon, Switzerland, the European Championship qualification second round group draws for the WU-17 and WU-19 national teams took place. In the course of the draw, the next opponents of the Latvian girls’ national team were also determined.
As you know, in the first round of the 2023 WU-19 EČ qualification B League, Latvian young footballers won third place, first losing to their peers from Albania (1:3), then crushing the Armenian women (13:0) and finally recognizing the superiority of Romania in a fierce battle ( 0:1). In the second round of the qualification tournament, the Latvian national team was in the B league. From that team competes not for a place in the final tournament, but for the right to receive a promotion to the A League next year. The final tournament itself will take place in June in Belgium. Latvia’s WU-19 team was drawn in Group B3 along with Northern Ireland, Kosovo and Cyprus. The tournament will be held in Northern Ireland in 2023 from 3 to 11 April.
On the other hand, the Latvian WU-17 national team took second place in the first round of EC qualification, beating Azerbaijan (4:0) and losing to Slovakia (0:6). After this round, it became known that Latvia will play in the B league in the second round. Meanwhile, in the A League team competition, the seven teams that will participate in the European Championship finals in Estonia in May will be determined.
As a result of the draw, Latvia ended up in Group B6, where they will compete against Ukraine and Bulgaria. The mini-tournament of this group will be held in Bulgaria in 2023 from March 2 to 10. The winners of the B League groups will receive promotion to the A League in next year’s qualifiers.
