Flag scandals, Ronaldo’s ‘beaten’ record and impenetrable Brazilians – “Behind” at 4 p.m.

The FIFA World Cup continues in Qatar, and as the battle for the playoffs heats up, we experience more and more beautiful moments on the soccer field, but pay less attention to the bad things off it. The Brazilian national team repeats the defensive records, the Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo either repeats the scoring record or not – depending on whether you believe your eyes or FIFA staff. Political scandals about “wrong” flags also stand out. Uldis Strautmanis talks about all this with sports journalists Agri Suveizda and Jānis Bendzikas in the program “Aizmugure” at 16:00.

It has already been reported that for a short time the leader of the Portuguese football team, Ronaldo, caught up with his legendary compatriot Eusebius in terms of goals scored in the World Cup – the first goal of Portugal’s game against Uruguay was scored in the 54th minute, when Bruno Fernandes sent the ball towards the goal, cutting it. Ronaldo reached for the ball in a high jump, which flew into the goal, but FIFA officials, after watching the video replay, decided that the goal should be credited to Fernandes.

Meanwhile, the Brazilian national team has repeated the record set by France in 1998 – in its first two games against Serbia and Switzerland, it did not allow the opponents to make a single shot on their own goal.

Speaking of scandals, a demonstrator with an LGBTQ rainbow flag ran onto the pitch during the match between Portugal and Uruguay. His clothing also bore pro-Ukraine and pro-Iranian insurgent slogans. Meanwhile, the Iranian Football Federation has demanded a 10-game disqualification of the US national team because the Iranian flag without the national emblem and the slogan “There is no god but Allah” was posted on the social media accounts of the US Football Federation during the World Cup. On the other hand, Serbia could get into trouble, because in the dressing room they have hung a flag with the outline of the country, in which Kosovo is also added to Serbia. Serbia does not recognize the independence of Kosovo.

We would like to remind you that throughout the FIFA World Cup final tournament, we will focus mainly on this in the program “Aizmugure”, discussing the latest results, scandals and achievements with both football specialists and journalists, as well as well-known sports enthusiasts in the studio. During the World Cup, the program will reach the audience twice as often – in addition to the usual Thursday afternoon broadcasts, we will also reach the audience in special editions on Monday mornings at 9.30 am.

“Aizgure” is a program of “Delfi TV”, whose episodes we publish every week on Thursdays. After the premiere episode, the recording is available in the program archive. In the program, Uldis Strautmanis, together with athletes, journalists, sports officials and politicians, opens the curtain on sports achievements and behind the scenes.

The latest episodes of the show are available on Apple and Spotify podcasts!
