What do pro soccer player Beth Mead’s Sports Personality of the Year and male synchronized swimmers at the Olympics have in common? In both cases, equality is gaining momentum.

Ztwo reports from the wide world of sports, from Wednesday evening and Thursday. They are unrelated, partly because one concerns soccer player Beth Mead and the other concerns synchronized swimming at the Olympic Games. And yet they have a lot in common. Because they show that things never have to stay the way they are. And that is – at least in these cases – a good thing.

Sequentially. Beth Mead, England striker and European Championship top scorer in the summer, was voted Sports Personality of the Year, ahead of cricket captain Ben Stokes and Olympic curling champion Eve Muirhead. Organized by the BBC, the public vote resulted in the winner, Beth Mead, becoming the first female footballer to receive the award in the UK. This also shows how popular this women’s tournament is. The television ratings of the men’s World Cup in Germany lagged behind those achieved during the women’s European Championship.
