The FIA has tightened the technical regulations, so that the experimental front wing that the Mercedes team took to the United States Grand Prix is banned from next year. The decision was made at the World Motor Sport Council held on Wednesday.

The German racing stable was on the edge of what the rules allowed with the design of the front wing. The team provided the wing with extra slot gap separators. The part that connects the different layers of the front wing turned out to offer an aerodynamic advantage and that is no longer allowed, according to the car association. Mercedes already smelled trouble during the current season, because the part was never mounted on the car as a precaution.

Rules tightened

The international motorsport federation has tightened the technical regulations, so that the Mercedes wing no longer falls within the rules. To be precise, the FIA has defined the slot gap separators amended. According to the new rules, the part may consist of up to eight separator braces, but must form a structural connection between the different layers of the front wing. In addition, the size and the distance between the fins are also recorded.

During the race weekend in the United States, Mercedes technical director Mike Elliot expressed all his doubts about the component. At the time, he indicated that the FIA was involved every step of the way and that the motor federation was not sure whether the design could be given the green light.
