After a season at the University of Pittsburgh, he moved to Old Dominion University.[1] Gatling was named Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year in 1990 and 1991 respectively. Between 1988 and 1991 he averaged 21.3 points per match in 85 appearances for the university team.[2]

As a professional basketball player, Gatling played a total of 715 games in the NBA. His highest point average in an NBA main round came in the 1996-97 season when he averaged 19.1 points per game for the Dallas Mavericks.[3] His highs in NBA appearances were 38 points (January 2001 against the Sacramento Kings) and 20 rebounds (November 1996 against the Utah Jazz).[2] Later he was still under contract with PBK CSKA Moscow in Russia and with Scavolini Pesaro in Italy.[4] One of his outward features during his basketball playing career was a headband.[1]

In December 2013, Gatling was sentenced to a four-year suspended sentence for fraud. In December 2017, he was sentenced to two and a half years in prison. According to prosecutors, he is said to have fraudulently induced twelve people to pay him a total of 155,000 US dollars.[5]
