Bundesliga legend: heart surgery for Jupp Heynckes | Sports

Jupp Heynckes (77) had to undergo heart surgery in November.

The legendary coach in Düsseldorf had several bypasses, reports the “Kicker”. Heynckes spent two weeks in the hospital’s ward and intensive care unit.

The former European (1972) and World Champion (1974): “It was the worst time of my life. I could not sleep. Time does not pass, it was a martyrdom.”

In the meantime, Bayern’s triple coach from 2013 is back at home, rehabilitation is pending. Heynckes would like to express his sincere thanks “to all the doctors and all the staff who looked after me”.

Heynckes is one of the great legends of the Bundesliga. Between 1965 and 1978 he played 295 games for Borussia Mönchengladbach (champion 1971, 1975, 1976 & 1977) and Hannover 96.

He was active as a coach even longer (1979-2018), where he celebrated his greatest successes at Bayern Munich (triple 2013, four championship titles) and Real Madrid (Champions League triumph 1998). In the Bundesliga he also looked after Borussia Mönchengladbach (1979 to 1987, 2006/07), Eintracht Frankfurt (1994/95), Schalke 04 (2004 to August 2005) and Bayer Leverkusen (2009-2011).
