Blue Jays acquire pitcher with Chris Bassitt

The Toronto Blue Jays added to their pitching rotation on Monday by agreeing to a three-year, $63 million contract with right-handed pitcher Chris Bassitt.

The news was reported by several media. The agreement will only be confirmed after the successful completion of physical tests.

Bassitt, 34, was with the New York Mets last year and with the Oakland A’s before that. He has maintained a 3.29 ERA since 2018, earning him a spot among major league baseball’s top pitchers.

The 1.96m right-hander joins a rotation of Alek Manoah, Kevin Gausman and José Berríos in Toronto as Hyun-Jin Ryu is injured and Ross Stripling becomes a free agent.

The Blue Jays, who traded outfielder Teoscar Hernandez earlier this winter, signed center fielder Kevin Kiermaier to a one-year deal last week, but they could be active again, either in the free agent market or the exchange market in the coming weeks.

They have the green light from their owner to offer important contracts.
