With a sweet and sour taste Matthew Berrettini ended a day in which he achieved victory for Italy with his victory against Thiago Monteiro, but ended the day with a defeat in the mixed doubles of the United Cup 2023, a category that the world number 16 has tried for the first time. Berrettini comments at a press conference on how this experience has been and what he expects from his next match against Casper Ruud.

“I expected to have a game like this, that it would be decided in a few points and that is what happened. I know Thiago, he is a great player, left-handed, complicated. I was ready at the important moments. Maybe in the second set I could have done more in the rest games, but that’s tennis. It gives me a lot of confidence for the next games and for the next month”.
Next opponent: Casper Ruud
“Starting the season with tough matches like this is really good for us. Casper is one of the best tennis players right now on the circuit. He had an incredible season reaching the final of the ATP Finals as well. I have known him quite well since he was very young and I like confrontation. We’ve always had great battles, but it’s going to be the first time I’ve played with him representing Italy. It will be different. I’m going to have extra motivation and I’m sure it will be a great match”.
Mixed doubles differences
“They were two good days of matches, the level was really high. My team says we had fun, but I didn’t have fun when I lost to Camila (Rosatello) in doubles (laughs). It was the first time she played mixed doubles, so it was a new experience. We enjoyed a lot, really. It’s different, but it’s very good. I look forward to playing more.
In mixed doubles we have to compensate each other. My serve with my game I think they fit Camila quite well. We played against a very strong team, so it was not easy. When you play two guys you don’t really think about where you have to be, you just hit the ball. When you play against a boy and a girl, sometimes you think about it too much. It has been a lot of fun and with high-level tennis”, explains Berrettini.
