Wednesday evening, 5 p.m. in the French town of Auxerre with 34,500 inhabitants: BILD is at the first appearance of Alexander Nübel (26) after Manuel Neuer (36) was injured on his skis. With AS Monaco, the keeper wins 3-2 in table 18. AJ Auxerre.
Since Neuer broke his right leg on December 9th, the name Nübel has been discussed daily as the new number 1 on Säbener Straße.
In Auxerre, the fans who have traveled with him greet him with cheers and chants of “Nübel” as he warms up.
To the game: Nübel initially has nothing to do against the third from last – until the 30th minute. Auxerre gets a penalty, Nübel speculates wrong and cannot parry M’baye Niang’s shot in the middle to make it 0-1. In injury time in the first half, Monaco equalized with a penalty kick through Ben Yedder (45 + 3), Nübel points towards the goal scorer while celebrating.
When Ben Seghir made it 2-1 (58th), Nübel took a sip from his drinking bottle, but then started to sweat. First he clears a strong Sakhi shot (67′), the following corner deflects teammate and runner-up Fofana unhappily into his own net to equalize 2-2 (68′).
In the end, Nübel can still celebrate! In the 85th minute, Seghir hits a dream goal to make it 3:2. The goalkeeper shows no movement, is cool as a block of ice.
What’s next for the keeper? Bayern took Nübel from Schalke on a free transfer in 2020 and loaned it to Monaco a year later.
The problem: the record champions have no access during the winter break. Nübel’s return must be freely negotiated. The talks are difficult. Monaco needs a quick replacement, and Nübel also wants a perspective beyond the summer.
That’s why Gladbach’s Yann Sommer (34) is also very hot in the race!
Switching winter from summer would be a win-win situation for everyone involved. Gladbach could collect a fee before Sommer’s contract ended in June 2023, would have a replacement in Jan Olschowsky (21) – and Sommer would have a chance at the title in Munich!
“I don’t want to say anything today. I’m currently in open talks with Borussia,” Sommer told BILD yesterday in Mönchengladbach – while Nübel plays 430 kilometers away in Auxerre with Monaco.
