Basketball is the most practiced sports discipline in the country by people three years of age or older, this according to the data provided by the National Survey of Multiple Purpose Households (EnHogar 2022) carried out by the National Statistics Office.
According to the results of the survey, 30.3% of the population with three years or more practiced basketball; closely followed by baseball, with 29.3% of the surveyed population practicing it.
Both sports disciplines are followed by volleyball (10.6%), soccer (7%), softball (6.1%).
The survey also indicates that 40.6% of the female population aged 3 years and over who practices some sport practices volleyball, while 34.9% of the males play basketball.
41.3% of the residents, 3 years or older, in rural areas, practice baseball; while 31.6% of those who live in urban areas play basketball.
Enhogar points out that men represent 83% of the population aged 3 years or over who practice any sports discipline, participated in a sports tournament in the 12 months prior to the survey; while 42.7% of the females participated in a competition one year before the application of the questionnaire.
In the urban area, 43.0% of the population that practices some sports discipline participated in a tournament in the 12 months prior to the survey; equally, 49.3% of the population that belongs to the low-middle socioeconomic group that practices participated in a competition.
28.4% of the population between 10 and 14 years of age who practice any sports discipline participated in a sports tournament in the 12 months prior to the survey.
Of the population aged 3 years and over who practice sports, 79.7% are men and 20.3% women; It is also specified that 53.4% of the female population that practices some sport, does so 1 to 2 days a week.
