‘Argentina is now better than when they won the Copa America’

Jakarta

Argentine goalkeeper, Emiliano Martinez is determined to bring his country to win the 2022 World Cup. According to him, the current Albiceleste squad is much stronger than before.

Argentina’s journey to the 2022 World Cup was met with stumbling blocks after being beaten 1-2 by Saudi Arabia in the first match. But slowly Lionel Messi et al rose.

Two wins over Mexico and Poland ensured Argentina advanced to the knockout stages. Then there were Australia, the Netherlands and Croatia which were defeated. Five successive wins have made Lionel Scaloni’s squad advance to the final to face France.

This is the second final in two years for Argentina. Previously, they beat Brazil in the 2021 Copa America final. On the sidelines, they also managed to win the Finalissima after winning 3-0 over the European Cup champions, Italy.

Martinez was determined to marry the Copa America and World Cup titles for Argentina. He has even imagined what he will do if his country emerges as champion this weekend.

“Since I was called up to the national team, this team continues to improve from time to time. This is not a team that won the Copa America, nor is it a team that won the Finalissima. We have advanced a lot,” Martinez told Argentine daily Clarin and quoted by Reuters.

“We have to believe in big things. Believing and trying to make it happen is the attitude that is in us, with respect and ambition… We already have talent in the team.”

“I dream of returning to Argentina and walking around the Obelisco (monument in Buenos Aires) with my team-mates (if they win),” explained Martinez.

Argentina vs France will be held at Lusail Stadium, Sunday (18/12) at 22.00 WIB. Will Martinez’s dream come true?
