Now that Roberto Martinez has left, the Red Devils need a new national coach. We asked the question on Thursday evening who should succeed the Spaniard, and you answered en masse in our poll: more than 10,000 votes were cast. In the end, Michel Preud’homme emerged as the winner with 30 percent of the vote.

Preud’homme was far superior to the electorate, as he received more than twice as many votes as the number two in our poll. That is Hein Vanhaezebrouck, who narrowly beats off Vincent Kompany with 13 percent of the vote (also 13 percent). Philippe Clement (10 percent) and Martinez’s assistant Thierry Henry (9 percent) complete the top five.

Also striking: almost 7 percent of voters would like to see a name that was not included in our poll. This option scored better than Louis van Gaal (5 percent), Frank Vercauteren (5 percent), Thomas Vermaelen (4 percent) and Wouter Vrancken (4 percent).
