WTA > Billie Jean King pays Wimbledon and its dress code: “Nothing is worse in sport than when you turn on the television and two players are wearing the same outfit. It’s horrible. Nobody knows who is who”

While the organization of Wimbledon recently opened the door to a relaxation of the dress code where all white on the courts has been compulsory since 1963, the legend Billie Jean King, founder of the WTA and precursor in terms of women’s rights in the sport, was delighted with this initiative which it has been defending for several years.

“We always worried because we wore white all the time. And it’s what you wear underneath that’s important for your period. And we always check to see if it shows. We are tense about this because we are above all artists and we want everything we wear to be immaculate, superb. We are artists. We bring the show to the people”first explained the former world number one in singles and doubles before pointing out another problem of full white. “Nothing is worse in sports than when you turn on the television and two players are wearing the same uniform or the same outfits. It’s horrible. Nobody knows who is who. It’s one of my pet peeves, I’ve been shouting it for years. Have you ever seen a sport where people wear the same outfit on each side? »
