Defeated the favorite after a deficit and then? Clean up first. Japan’s fans show their greatness after beating the German national team at the World Cup in Qatar. Your team had already made an exemplary exit at the last World Cup.
IIt is often said that true greatness is revealed in the moment of success. If so, then Japan national team fans may have grown a few inches. After the surprising 2:1 (0:1) of their team at the World Cup against Germany, Japan’s supporters not only celebrated, but also started an exemplary action.
When their victorious team had long since disappeared into the catacombs of the Khalifa Stadium and the stands had emptied, the Japanese fans apparently pulled out the garbage bags they had brought with them. Photos show them collecting rubbish in the stands together, filling a significant number of blue bags. The Asian fans are said to have cleared away the legacies of the German fans.
Not the first time that the Japanese made sure to leave the stadium clean. After the opening game between Qatar and Ecuador, they cleared the garbage in the stands. A tradition that has been attracting attention from Japan’s fans at major tournaments for a number of years.
At the 2018 World Cup in Russia, the Japanese national players also behaved in an exemplary manner. After the bitter elimination in the round of 16 against Belgium (2:3), the pros cleaned their cabin spotlessly clean. Instead of piles of rubbish, all that remained was a completely bare table on which they had placed a card with the inscription “Thank you” written in Cyrillic letters.
A Fifa official tweeted a photo of the Japanese dressing room at the time and wrote: “They thanked the fans, cleaned up, spoke to the media and even left a ‘thank you’ greeting in Russian. What an example for all teams. It was a privilege to work with them.”
After the furious victory against Germany, the Japanese proved once again that you can keep your decency even when you are in a rush to win.
