What the Boateng case means for professional football – sport

When the German national soccer team won the 2014 World Cup final against Argentina, Jérôme Boateng was one of the great heroes on the Rio night alongside goal scorer Mario Götze and the passionately fighting Bastian Schweinsteiger. Football fans still fondly remember the spectacular tackle of the central defender against superstar Messi.

But it’s been eight long years since Rio. Jérôme Boateng no longer delivers sporting headlines. The former defender of FC Bayern Munich has been sentenced by the Munich I District Court for bodily harm. He will probably have to pay a fine and, according to the verdict, would have a criminal record.

In this edition of “And now to sport” with Justin Patchett, Lena Kampf, Jana Stegemann and Ralf Wiegand explain why the Boateng case has a system in professional football – and how clubs and lawyers try to protect the private lives of their players.

Soccer Bundesliga, Champions League, sports policy at Fifa and DFB: “And now to sports”, the soccer podcast of the Süddeutsche Zeitung, gives insights into the most important soccer topic of the week. Every Monday, SZ sports editors discuss the background to current events.
