VfL Bochum: The most famous jersey in the Bundesliga returns! | Sports

Some Bundesliga fans have been waiting for this day for a long time…

In the 1996/97 season, newly promoted Bochum achieved a sensational fifth place. The Ruhrpott-Klub thus secured the first European Cup participation in the club’s history, and was allowed to play in the UEFA Cup a year later.

For the first international season, Bochum had a special jersey idea. They ran out in rainbow jerseys!

And after all, they reached the third round of the UEFA Cup in the colorful shirt. In the first round, VfL Turkey club Trabzonspor threw out, then knocked out FC Brugge from Belgium. Then it was over against Ajax Amsterdam.

25 years later, the iconic rainbow jersey returns!

As VfL itself announced, the Bochum players will wear a new version of the cult shirt in the Bundesliga home game against Gladbach on Tuesday.

The sponsor’s lettering “Vonovia”, the Bochum coat of arms and other small details are marked in rainbow colors on the black jersey.

The club writes about the announcement: “The historical derivation is not the only reason for the rainbow jersey. Because as anchored in the mission statement, VfL is committed to the following values: tolerance, fair play, solidarity and equality.”

And further: “Even if our colors are blue and white, we stand for variety and diversity and are therefore actually as colorful as a rainbow, because diversity means diversity of people and life forms.”

The jersey is already available in the Bochum online shop. Fans have to act pretty quick though!

Because the rainbow jersey is limited to 4630 pieces, based on the Bochum postal code. The jersey costs 54.95 euros in children’s sizes, while adult Bochum fans have to pay 79.95 euros.

Shortly after the start of sales, fans were already forwarded to a queue online. Apparently, the majority of Bochum supporters are hot for the return of the rainbow…
