Croky Cup
Zulte Waregem has qualified for the 1/8th finals of the Croky Cup tonight without shine. On the field of second division team Lommel, a goal from substitute Gano was enough.
Triple substitution is key moment in the match
In the Jupiler Pro League it has been doom and gloom for Zulte Waregem for a whole season. The Croky Cup was supposed to provide a boost for the two-time cup winner tonight. Second division Lommel SK was allowed to play host.
The first half was also for the home team. It had the most chances, but Sammy Bossut was right with Essevee. That couldn’t decide between the posts once before half time.
Even after the break there was no improvement at Zulte Waregem. The signal for Mbaye Leye to bring Gano, Vossen and Fadera between the lines.
That substitution turned out to be a key moment and immediately paid off: Fadera put Gano on his way to the 0-1. Lommel still had twenty minutes to respond. It was not possible to beat Sammy Bossut during the final offensive.
Zulte Waregem does not really fill up with confidence with this victory, but continues to convert with a narrow victory as usual.
Gano: “If it’s 2-0 at halftime, we have nothing to say”
Match winner Zinho Gano: “We don’t play a good first half at all. If it is 2-0 at halftime, we have nothing to say. After the substitution we can press a little, we get one chance and it is immediately 0-1.”
“It was not the intention to come in tonight, certainly not so early. But we have been very efficient tonight and that is important in the cup. The goal was just to continue and now focus on Eupen. ”
