With an assist for the winning goal, Jeremie Frimpong has distinguished himself in the Bundesliga with a 1-2 victory over Bayer Leverkusen at 1. FC Köln. Mitchel Bakker, the German club’s other potential World Cup-goer, also played in the derby.

Freiburg goalkeeper Mark Flek – also in the preselection of national coach Louis van Gaal – lost 3-1 to RB Leipzig.

The 21-year-old Frimpong gave the decisive cross to Moussa Diaby more than fifteen minutes before the end. The Frenchman steamed up the left side, going one-two with Frimpong and finishing after a long rush.

Frimpong has never played for the Orange squad. He competes with Devyne Rensch for a place behind first choice Denzel Dumfries as judge wingback. The 22-year-old Bakker – who has never played an international match – is eligible for a place on the left wing, just like Daley Blind, Tyrell Malacia and Pascal Struijk.

Pupil Ten Hag scores

The highlight of the first half between Köln and Leverkusen was a beautiful goal from Benno Schmitz. The right back of Köln took the ball to the chest and then played hard from about twenty meters into the intersection.

It was the first professional goal of 27-year-old Schmitz. He had last scored in 2014 in the second team of Bayern Munich, which was coached by Erik ten Hag at the time.

Shortly after the break, Leverkusen scored 1-1. A free kick by Nadiem Amiri was changed by the wall, leaving the Köln goalkeeper without a chance. Not long after, Diaby scored the winning goal on Frimpong’s pass.

Trainer Xabi Alonso booked his second win in a row with Leverkusen. The Champions League participant thus takes some distance from the relegation zone.

Flaked with Freiburg

Mark Fleks is no longer the Bundesliga’s least passed goalkeeper, a status he shared with Bayern Munich’s Manuel Neuer and Sven Ulreich. The keeper of Freiburg had to fish three times against RB Leipzig: 3-1.

Fleks is passed by Nkunku

Flek, who is also in the Orange squad, was passed by Mohamed Simakan and Bundesliga top scorer Christopher Nkunku in two minutes. Fleks also had to not answer the question with a penalty by Emil Forsberg fifteen minutes before the end.

Due to the defeat, Freiburg has to give up second place to Union Berlin, the upcoming Europa League opponent of Ajax. The club from Berlin drew 2-2 at home against Augsburg.

Sheraldo Becker opened the scoring beautifully. He just about hit from the sidelines after Augsburg goalkeeper Rafal Gikiewicz got too far out of his goal. Former Vitesse defender Danilo Doekhi played the entire match at Union.
