Qatar Admits 500 Workers Killed While Building 2022 World Cup Project

Jakarta, CNNIndonesia

Chief World Cup 2022 QatarHassan Al-Thawadi, acknowledged that around 400 to 500 migrant workers died while constructing infrastructure projects related to this prestigious event.

“The estimate is around 400, between 400 and 500. I don’t have the exact number. That’s been talked about. One death is too many, it’s that simple,” Al-Thawadi told CNNTuesday (29/11).

The issue of workers’ deaths has been in the spotlight after The Guardian released a report alleging that 6,500 workers died after Qatar was set to host the 2022 World Cup.

During preparations for the World Cup, Qatar built seven stadiums, hotels and expanded the country’s airports, rail network and highways.

The Qatari government always obscures the news of the worker’s death. Early November, an official told CNN that there were indeed dozens of deaths of workers building World Cup stadiums.

However, only three of them are related to their work on building World Cup stadiums. Meanwhile, 37 other deaths were not related to the work of the workers.

The number was later reaffirmed by a spokesperson for the Qatar Supreme Committee for Transfers and Relics (SC).

He emphasized that based on national statistical data, the total number of work-related labor deaths reached 414 in the 2014-2020 period. That too from all sectors, not just the World Cup.

This figure differs greatly from the report The Guardian which revealed 6,500 migrant workers from South Asia had died in Qatar since the country was set to host the World Cup in 2010.
