Pouille: “I was demoralized and thought about quitting tennis”

It was the great sensation of the circuit in 2016, but its success was fleeting. It’s been a long time since we heard news about Lucas Pouille, a type of infinite quality but without enough consistency to establish itself at the top. The Frenchman was at Gilles Simon’s farewell and spoke with Tennis Actu about his current situation, revealing shocking questions about past, present and future: “I suffered complications in June that have not allowed me to train yet. I will not go to Australia, that’s for sure. I hope to be ready in the coming months, although I will wait as long as it takes. There have been many ups and downs, especially downs. No I have had depression, but yes I was completely demoralized and thought about quitting tennis for quite some time. There was a time in my head when I was completely disconnected.”.

But there is light at the end of the tunnel, and there is a great goal that keeps Lucas, now in the #385 del rankingmotivated: dispute the 2024 Paris Olympics. “The Olympics have always been a big goal in my career. I have a year and a half left to get back into the top-50 and be able to qualify for the 2024 Games. That’s what still gives me hope.”
