Southampton fires Hasenhüttl

Ralph Hasenhüttl (55) is no longer the coach of the English first division club FC Southampton. After the 4-1 defeat against Newcastle, the ex-Leipzig coach was fired on Monday morning.

At around 11 a.m., the club officially announced the end of the 55-year-old on Twitter.

Hasenhüttl took over as coach in Southampton in December 2018. In 183 games on the Saints touchline, he recorded 60 wins and 38 draws. At the same time, he suffered 75 defeats during his tenure. This results in a point average of 1.26 points per game.

Hasenhüttl, who coached FC Ingolstadt and RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga, has been under increasing pressure in recent weeks. As early as October 8th, after his team lost 4-0 at Manchester City, the English media had speculated about his end.

Southampton then drew with West Ham and leaders Arsenal before drawing 1-0 at Crystal Palace last week.

The “Saints” are only 18th in the table after 14 games. There have only been three measly victories so far this season.

According to the reports of the English “Athletic” and “Sun”, the club had already decided a few days ago to release the Austrian before the World Cup break.

After the home defeat against Newcastle, the dismissal follows.

In the press release, Southampton thanks the ex-coach and justifies the expulsion. “Hasenhüttl, who was appointed in December 2018, is leaving the club having made a significant contribution to the club, overseeing some memorable results and also playing a key role in developing our club infrastructure, identity and player squad. However, we believe it is now time to make a change.”

Until further notice, the Spanish assistant coach Rubén Sellés (39) will take over the role of Hasenhüttl as interim coach. On Wednesday evening, the Premier League club, threatened with relegation, has to play third division club Sheffield Wednesday at home in the English League Cup.

The Hasenhüttl successor will be presented “in due course”. It is not known whether he will be on the bench in the next league game on Saturday at Liverpool (4 p.m.).
