One year has passed since the Peng Shuai case and there are more doubts than certainties

The days go by and the unknowns continue in the world of women’s tennis. A year ago, the sad news of the complaint made by the tennis player Peng Shuai who claimed to have been sexually assaulted by a Chinese communist official was released.. After this, no more was known about the whereabouts of the champion in doubles of Grand Slam tournaments.

This led to the most important tennis entities suspending all their competitions in the Asian region until the case is resolved. Steve Simon, Executive Director of the WTAspoke about the tennis player’s case and the future of tournaments in this country: “We have been confirmed that Peng is safe and comfortable, but we have yet to see her in person. We need to resolve this issue. We’re sure she’s okay and we know she’s in Beijing, which is great. We want that. But we have not received the assurances that we want regarding the investigation that we request.”

What is the true story? That’s all we’ve asked for. What is the history? She obviously had great courage to present what she said. The principles that are involved are in line with what we stand for as an organization. And what we’ve asked for is an investigation to understand what happened, what didn’t happen, and then address it appropriately.” assured the former tennis player, who still questions the return of professional tournaments to China, which have not been played since 2019 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the occurrence of the aforementioned events.

“We are hopeful that we will be in a position to have tournaments in the region in 2023, but we will not compromise our fundamental principles to do so,” Simon confirmed waiting for more answers and a solution to an unknown that is still unresolved.
