José ‘Germán’ Menéndez Gancedo, historic former Sporting player, dies

Mourning at Sporting. José ‘Germán’ Menéndez Gancedo passed away this afternoon. A history of the rojiblanco club leaves at 98 years of age. He wore the red and white jersey between 1948 and 1956 and was one of the players who appears in ‘Volver a empezar’, the Oscar-winning film directed by Jose Luis Garci.

Germán played 151 games with Sporting in those eight seasons at the rojiblanco club. He would later play for Caudal, where he retired at the age of 33. The dean of Sporting leaves, leaving a huge void in the entity. During his lifetime, he received many tributes and recognitions for his legacy, with the Anselmo López Association being one of the organizations that most and best extolled his figure.
