Bundesliga coach demands video referee revolution

The discussion about the video referee continues!

background: Serious mistakes in the Cologne basement, most recently in Dortmund’s victory in Frankfurt (2-1), when the video referee did not see a nudge from BVB star Adeyemi against Lindstrom.

Or at least scenes worthy of discussion, such as on Friday evening when Gladbach’s Bensebaini only sees yellow after a hit against Stuttgart’s Anton after a VAR check. Thorsten Kinhöfer (54), referee expert at BILD am Sonntag: “It’s a hit, so it’s assault and red.”

Oliver Glasner (48) demands a challenge. Means: The trainers are allowed to request a video examination (e.g. once per half-time).

The Frankfurt coach: “I’m always a friend of innovations. And it’s important to see what can be optimized. If I could throw a red flag like in football, that would be great.”

Julian Nagelsmann (35/Bayern) likes the idea: “I wouldn’t have anything against a challenge for the two coaches, because you have a little more responsibility and the referee is relieved a little.”

But he also says: “I think that if the referee can see clear situations, he should trust himself and decide. He should continue to have sovereignty.”

“I hate this topic” Suddenly the mood changes at Klopp!

The referees are also positive about the challenge idea. dr Jochen Drees (52), VAR project manager at the DFB: “For me personally, that’s quite conceivable. There are pros and cons, but it’s worth considering whether it’s worth a try.”

Leipzig coach Marco Rose (46) is not a friend of the challenge: “I think it’s important that we make sure that football remains football and that we don’t intervene too much and change things again.”

Rose wouldn’t mind doing away with the video referee entirely: “Maybe without it again. Back to the roots (translated: back to the roots; ed.), how football used to be.”
