Banksy unveiled a mural in a war-torn Ukrainian city

(CNN) — Renowned street artist Banksy unveiled his latest work of art in an Instagram post: a mural in the liberated Ukrainian city of Borodianka.

The artwork shows a gymnast balancing on a pile of rubble on the side of a building damaged by Russian attacks.

The graffiti artist published three images of the piece on Friday on social networkswith a simple caption reading “Borodyanka, Ukraine”, using an alternate spelling for the city’s name.

Speculation about Banksy’s presence in Ukraine had increased after a series of murals appeared in Borodianka, located about 35 miles (about 56 kilometers) northwest of the capital Kyiv.

One of the artworks, not officially claimed by the artist, depicted a man being knocked over by a young boy during a judo match.

Another showed two boys using a metal Czech hedgehog, an anti-tank defense obstacle, as a seesaw.

Borodianka was particularly hard hit by Russian airstrikes at the start of the invasion of Ukraine in February, with many buildings reduced to heaps of rubble by long-range attacks.

Before the war it was home to 13,000 people, but most fled after the Russian invasion. What remained of Borodianka, after heavy shelling and devastating attacks, was occupied by Russian forces, who entered the town on February 28.

An unclaimed mural by Banksy shows a man being flipped during a judo match with a boy.

The town returned to Ukrainian control on April 1, and returning residents found their homes destroyed and shops looted, with windows smashed and contents stolen.

The letter “V”, a symbol used by Russia’s Eastern Military District along with the letter “Z”, an emblem of Moscow’s so-called “special military operation”, was found painted on buildings, vehicles and checkpoints.

Since then, the city has been the focus of reconstruction efforts.
