Complete off day for Real Madrid. The Royal is not yet certain of a group win after a defeat – the first since May 8 – at RB Leipzig. The fact that it stayed at 3-2 was mainly thanks to Thibaut Courtois.
A false start was an understatement. Real Madrid – without Hazard, luckily with Courtois – lost the match in Leipzig in just twenty minutes.
Soon our national number 1 had to unpack for the first time with an excellent save. A few minutes later, another intervention followed, but Courtois had no chance at all with Gvardiol’s rebound.
Five minutes later, Real gave away a second goal far too easily after weak defense. Courtois swore once.
Shortly before the break, the Spanish champion woke up briefly. Vinicius took care of the connecting goal, but after that goal there was no restart in the second half.
Leipzig kept popping up dangerously for Courtois. And ten minutes before time – Hazard had come on in the meantime – it was a third time. Timo Werner was allowed to walk in completely free at the second pole. Rodrygo would score the 3-2 from eleven meters.
Courtois sat on the floor staring blankly ahead. Even the best in the world can’t save a collective off day on their own.
