The situation of Union, Anderlecht and KAA Gent: how can European fate be decided? | Conference League

Can Union do what Club couldn’t do yesterday? The vice champion can celebrate group win, if it beats Malmö later. Or if the match, like Union Berlin-Braga, ends in a draw.

If Union doesn’t lose – or Berlin-Braga isn’t a draw – our representative will advance in the Europa League anyway.

Should Union finish second, an extra round has been waiting since this season. The runners-up of the 8 Europa League groups will play play-offs against the 8 thirds of the Champions League in February. The Europa League teams are seeded. The winners of those duels can go to the 1/8th finals of the Europa League.

No match without pressure for Anderlecht, it seems. The Purple & White receive FCSB with a knife to their throats, because if it doesn’t win and Silkeborg does (against West Ham), wintering in the Conference League will already be impossible.

The first shot goes straight to the 1/8th finals. The 8 runners-up from the Conference League play play-offs against the 8 thirds from the Europa League. The Conference League teams are seeded. The winners of those duels go to the 1/8th finals of the Conference League.

Hopefully they have already found a four-leaf clover in Ireland at KAA Gent. It is best to win against Shamrock Rovers if the Buffalos want to continue in the Conference League.

When KAA Gent draws and Molde wins (against Djurgårdens), the European adventure is over. That is also the case if Ghent loses and Molde takes at least one point.

A win would make the assignment in the (decisive) last group match against the Norwegians much easier anyway.
