He had to postpone his return again. Judoka Teddy Riner, initially selected for the European Mixed Team Championships in November, said on Tuesday October 11 that he had to withdraw from the competition, not yet having recovered sufficiently from a sprained ankle. “I remain positive, it is healing well, it is healing well, now you have to be patient again, (…) from what the medical staff says, we are at the end”, announced the ten-time world champion on The Team Channel.

Injured in the right ankle during training last August in Morocco, Riner had already had to give up the World Championships currently taking place in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. But he had still been selected for the Euro by teams, the only competition which is missing from his outstanding record, his participation being subject to medical opinion.

His replacement for the competition to be held on November 12 in Mulhouse has not yet been announced. At 33, Riner knows that he will have to deal with physical problems on the road to the Paris 2024 Olympics. “If I have to step on the mats in 2024 with a broken leg, I will”, he said a few weeks ago. In the meantime, the one who has not appeared on the tatami since July 2022 wanted to remind his teammates of their goal on Tuesday. “The main thing is 2024, what happens before you have to forget it as quickly as possible and use it to bounce back (…) European and world championships, everything there is before that doesn’t count.”
