THE BALL – Casillas and the Golden Ball: «I still don’t understand…» (GOLDEN BALL)

Iker Casillas took the example of Thibaut Courtois to question the criteria for awarding the Ballon d’Or. For the former Real Madrid goalkeeper, who played for FC Porto, the Belgian goalkeeper deserved to have been among the top three in the vote for the award given by France Football magazine to the best player of the year.

“I’m happy for Courtois! He is, without a doubt, the best goalkeeper in the world. I can’t be happy for not being on the podium in the Ballon d’Or vote. I still don’t understand what those who decide this award are based on», wrote the Spaniard on social media.

Courtois, who last season won LaLiga and the Champions League with Real Madrid, was named the best goalkeeper of the year, but ended up finishing the Ballon d’Or vote only in seventh. Karim Benzema, also from Real Madrid, was the big winner at the gala that took place last Monday in Paris. Sadio Mané (Liverpool in 2021/2022 and Bayern in 2022/2023) and Kevin De Bruyne (Manchester City) completed the podium.

Also on social media, Casillas also mocked about the club of the year award, given to Manchester City. «Congratulations to Real Madrid for this third place…», he wrote. Liverpool were in second place.
