Quebecer Benjamin St-Juste was at the heart of the Washington Commanders celebrations last Thursday, and with good reason.
The cornerback made the tiebreaker late in the game to deny Darnell Mooney’s touchdown to confirm a 12-7 win over the Chicago Bears. In interview with the members of the show BlitzMonday, St-Juste went back on his play which made it possible to deprive the receiver of the Bears of the touchdown at the very end of the meeting.
“Justin Fields had made a long run to our five-yard line. I knew they were only going to have one game left. When the huddle was over, I saw their best receiver coming to my side, in isolation, one-on-one. Already there, I knew the ball was coming, but I didn’t know the route. »
“It was important that I stay calm. Often people are inclined to want to do more, because the moment is big. The key for me was to keep my technique, to stay calm and not to have stopped until the whistle. »
“I decided to run to the receiver, put my hand between his to try to break down the pass and with my other hand, I made sure he didn’t enter the end zone. It was a great moment that gave us energy for the next game. »
The Commanders learned during the day that they would be without quarterback Carson Wentz for an extended period with a broken finger. St-Juste, however, has confidence in his replacement Taylor Heinicke to take over and hope to improve the lot of Washington, which has a 2-4 record since the start of the campaign.
“I have no stress, he replied about Heinickie. Heinickie has been playing at the starting position for two years. He played really well in the playoffs against the Bucs and he gave us some good times. »
