Maylín del Toro gives in in his first trial

Cuba did not have a good day this Sunday at the World Judo Championship and once again its representative yielded in the first match of the day. If now the best options will arrive for the Greater Antilles, so far the appointment is discreet for the Island.

On this fourth date, the only one to step onto the tatami was Maylín del Toro at 63 kg, but an unexpected loss to Spain’s Sarai Guerrero quickly took her out of competition.

In front of a woman ranked 59th in the world rankings who won the title in an open tournament in Europe as the best result, Maylín -25th in the standings and third this year at the Budapest Grand Slam- did not show her best weapons and received three shidos against her. The last of them, decreed in overtime, caused his disqualification.

In this division, the Japanese Megumi Horikawa triumphed, superior in the final to the Canadian Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard. In bronze, the nationalized Portuguese Barbara Timo and the French Manon Deketer finished.

In the men’s 81 kg division, Georgian Tato Grigalashvili won. The podium was completed by the Belgian vice-champion Mathias Casse and the bronzes of the Japanese Takanori Nagase and the Austrian Shamil Borchashvili.

For this Monday, Cuba places great hopes on Iván Felipe Silva (90 kg), fourth on the universal list. For his first fight, the West Indian will face the winner between the difficult Serbian Nemanja Majdov and the Moldovan Dorin Gotonoaga.

The best thing on the island so far has been the arrival in the round of 16 of Magdiel Estrada (73 kg) and Arnaes Odelín (57 kg). Besides Maylín, Danny Porte (60 kg), Orlando Polanco (66 kg) and Melissa Hurtado (52 kg) also gave in during their first fights.
