One weight class was held for each gender, and Saki Niizoe (Japan Self-Defense Forces) in the women’s 70-kilogram weight class won the bronze medal. She dominated Miriam Buttkereit (Germany) in the third-place play-off after losing in the semifinals.

Shiho Tanaka (JR East Japan) lost to Barbara Matic (Croatia) in the semi-finals with 3 coaching rules. She withdrew from the 3rd place play-off against Sane van Duyke (Netherlands), a bronze medalist at the Tokyo Olympics, due to an injury to her right knee. Matic won two straight titles.

Kasuke Masuyama (Park 24) in the men’s 90-kilogram class lost to Tokyo Olympic gold medalist Rasha Bekauri (Georgia) by one round in the second round and was eliminated. The same class has failed to win the championship for 12 consecutive tournaments since 2007, and became the first Japanese team in this tournament to not win a medal. Dakhlat Bobonov (Uzbekistan) won the bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics last year in second place.

After completing the five weight classes for men and women, Japan won a total of five gold medals, three for women and two for men. (Joint)
