He defended as if to win and celebrated for the first time «Diario La Capital de Mar del Plata

CORRIENTES, (E) – An outstanding defensive performance opened the doors to Peñarol’s first win in the 2022/23 National Basketball League. It took place on the field of Regatas Corrientes, which he defeated this Saturday by 74 to 64, and put an end to the thread of two consecutive defeats.

Just as Peñarol had broken the game in the second quarter, after a very even start, Regatas took control in the third, and the uncertain destiny was raised for the last segment.

The balance in the first part was more marked in the result than in the development, where Peñarol had been slightly superior, without being able to reflect it in the figures.

The “milrayitas” set the tone after the first short break. He offered good efficiency with his open shot and, above all, a very tough defense, very firm, which allowed Regatas to convert just 7 points.

The rotation tested by coach Adrián Capelli -he used 11 players in the first half- made possible a high intensity and the energy was overwhelming (31-19).

In the final stretch, the Corrientes reacted backwards and then it was difficult for both teams to convert. But the visitor, despite allowing 9 offensive rebounds, took a good income to the locker room.

The expected response from Regatas came with greater force than expected in the third quarter. In just 5 minutes he scored the same number of points as in the entire first half. And he went on to command the result, with a good drive from Adrián Jaime, the contribution of Alejandro Diez from the bench and a greater prominence of Pablo Espinoza. Regatas defended and ran, to put a question mark towards the decisive stage.

The changing edges of the meeting reappeared and generated a very different context again. Peñarol seemed to recover his memory, defended effectively again, attacked patiently, found great responses from Pablo Alderete and Bruno Sansimoni contributed points and game generation.

On the other side, the Mesopotamians responded with breaks by Felipe Pais and a shot from distance by Charles Hinkle to reach the last 3 minutes with an equalizer.

A great defense by José Defilippo and two free kicks by Tomás Monacchi led to two long go-ahead possessions with 23.5 seconds left. From there to closing the game there was a step. And Peñarol celebrated it.
