Sipke Hulshoff will become an assistant to the Dutch national team after the World Cup in Qatar. The current assistant of Feyenoord has been added to his future coaching staff by the new national coach Ronald Koeman, the KNVB announced on Monday.
By our sports editorsThe 47-year-old Hulshoff signed a contract with the KNVB up to and including the European Championship of 2024. The Orange still has to qualify for that tournament. Hulshoff will continue to work as an assistant to trainer Arne Slot at Feyenoord. De Frisian will combine both functions.
Hulshoff will be the second assistant at Orange. Koeman previously found his first assistant in his brother Erwin. Goalkeeper coach Patrick Lodewijks also goes to Zeist, where Koeman will start his second period as national coach.
“Sipke is an innovative field trainer, who complements our technical staff well,” explains Koeman in choosing the relatively unknown Hulshoff. “In my staff I always try to bring people together who reinforce each other. I think we succeeded.”
Hulshoff never played in professional football
Hulshoff did not have a career in professional football as a player. He started as a youth trainer at SC Cambuur and in 2014 became an assistant to the first team of the Frisian club. He was interim trainer in Leeuwarden several times, including in 2016. Then he took over the honors together with Slot.
After two years as Wim Jonk’s assistant at FC Volendam, Hulshoff moved from Slot to Feyenoord last year. He started there as a trainer of the promises. He has been Slot’s assistant since this season, just like John de Wolf and Marino Pusic.
After the World Cup in Qatar, Koeman will start his second period as national coach of Orange. The former coach of Feyenoord, Ajax and PSV, among others, was already the choice of the Netherlands from 2018 to 2020. He then left Zeist for an adventure at FC Barcelona, where he was fired after more than a year.
Louis van Gaal is the national coach of Orange at the upcoming World Cup in Qatar. For the 71-year-old Van Gaal it will be his last games in his impressive coaching career. Under his leadership, the Netherlands has not yet lost a game. Van Gaal has been the elector in Zeist since September last year, after he succeeded the fired Frank de Boer.
