Bundesliga: Rapid celebrates victory in Tyrol

The Rapidlers were offensively harmless in the first half, but shortly before the break they took the lead out of nowhere through Guido Burgstaller (45th). Immediately after the break, “Joker” Marco Grüll (51st) and Burgstaller made everything clear with his second goal (57th/penalty).

Ferdy Druijf (78′) and Bernhard Zimmermann (81′), who also came on as a substitute, also scored, which put all of the green-whites’ attacking players on the top scorer list. After the recent 1-1 draw in Salzburg before the international break, Rapid regained their self-confidence ahead of the Vienna derby on Sunday in a week’s time at the Allianz Stadium.

Rapid Schützenfest in Tyrol

Rapid showed after the international break with a smashing win against WSG Tirol. The Hütteldorfer win away 5-0.

System change at Rapid after injury

There were two changes in the Rapidlers compared to the performance in Wals-Siezenheim. Captain Maximilian Hofmann defended for Martin Moormann, who was absent due to muscular problems, while Druijf was preferred to Zimmermann on the offensive. WSG trainer Thomas Silberberger was forced to make a change after 4-1 at LASK. Dominik Stumberger started instead of Osarenren Okungbowa, whom he had to replace early on in Pasching.

At Rapid, there wasn’t much going on offensively at first, the home side didn’t often get into the dangerous zone either, but could have done it with a Blume volley (29th). Shortly afterwards there was the next bad news for the Viennese. Hofmann retired injured, whereupon Rapid coach Ferdinand Feldhofer, including the substitution of Grüll, changed tactics and switched from a back three to a back four.

When everyone was already expecting a goalless draw at the break, Rapid struck. Kofi Schulz and Stumberger unhappily extended a throw-in to Burgstaller, who completed the long corner. His third goal of the season was a real gift. Nicolas Kühn almost followed suit, but Raffael Behounek was able to save for the defeated Ferdinand Oswald on the line (45+2).

Rapid unleashed after changing sides

In the first few seconds after the restart, Nik Prelec failed because of Niklas Hedl. Otherwise, however, only the Viennese played and shot out a rout as a result. Grüll gave Oswald no chance after an ideal pass by Koscelnik. For the offensive player it was the sixth goal in the seventh game against WSG. Shortly thereafter, Koscelnik was put down in the penalty area by Sandi Ogrinec, who had just been substituted on, and Burgstaller converted the penalty effortlessly.

While a Prelec goal (64th) was disallowed for foul play, the guests continued to play. Substitute Thorsten Schick served in his 200th league game with crosses first for Druijf and a little later for Zimmermann, who came on for the Dutchman. With this, the Viennese improved their hitherto meager goal tally. This time they scored five goals after only eight goals in eight games before.

Comments on the game:

Thomas Silberberger (WSG trainer): “At the end of the day it’s 0:5, that’s not good for the public image, because tomorrow you’ll only read the result. Nobody asks anymore how it came about. Goals one and three were a gift. You must never, ever commit a penalty foul like that. It is a pity that we made these simple mistakes. After that everything went at Rapid, we didn’t get there because we couldn’t recall it in our heads. In the first half I saw my team much stronger than Rapid up to the 0:1. All in all, we did a lot to ensure that Rapid wins so clearly.”

Ferdinand Feldhofer (Rapid coach): “I’m as happy as the players. It was anything but easy to get out of such a negative spiral, with such a result that’s an exclamation mark. I didn’t like the passivity in the first 30 minutes, we had no control there. That’s why I changed the system, which worked well. The longer the game lasted, the safer we became and the more I liked it. In terms of efficiency, we were really good today, it’s great that almost all attacking players scored.”
